NACCHO's Foundation Funding Guide, July 2004, Mental Health
NACCHO is pleased to present the seventh issue of our online Foundation Funding Guide. In response to requests from NACCHO membership, NACCHO is working with The Foundation Center to identify funding resources at the national and state level from private foundations. Each month, the guide will focus on one area of public health. This month, the guide features foundations that have listed "Mental Health" as a focus area. Project Relate is a public service campaign that strives to break down the stigma and stereotypes associated with mental illness and help the public relate to those who cope with these issues. The project is a joint effort between mental health service providers, advocacy groups, and non-profit organizations across Nebraska - a rare and important partnership.

BryanLGH mental health services offers an on-line Depression and Anxiety screening. The screening is anonymous. BryanLGH provides this screening so that individuals may find out-in a few minutes, and in the privacy of their home-whether or not professional consultation would be helpful.

The Resource Center to Address Discrimination and Stigma is a joint effort to tackle discrimination against persons with mental illnesses.

The October 2003 Grant Information Resources published by the Department of Health and Human Services USA is now available. Included in this resource guide: overview of grant funding, summary of grant process, principal granting agencies, grant information sources, and HHS assistance programs.

The 2003 Adult Parole Community Resource Directories are supplied by the Nebraska Deparment of Corrections Payroll adminstration, and are available for both Lincoln and Omaha as well as their surrounding areas.

FASTEN (Faith and Service Technical Education Network) works with faith-based organizations active in urban communities. They strive to strengthen collaboration and effectiveness through cooperative efforts and resource sharing.

The Rural Assistance Center is a national resource center focusing on rural health and human services. Its website contains information guides on a variety of topics, as well as funding opportunity information. These can be accessed by sponsor or topic. Links to current funding announcements are also available. This site is updated daily.

ACF is pleased to announce the launch of a new area on the ACF website devoted to the Faith-Based and Community Initiative (FBCI). The new FBCI web area features information on the Faith-Based and Community Initiative, lists links to funding opportunities, offers descriptions of featured programs, and describes resources for faith-based and community organizations. The site also provides links to key websites such as the HHS Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (CFBCI), the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, and the Compassion Capital Fund National Resource Center.

The State Incentive Cooperative Agreement (SICA) is a federal/state partnership addressing substance abuse among youth. SICA is regranting $7.5 million dollars to community partnerships in Nebraska.

Kaiser Daily Health Policy Report- Wednesday, July 23, 2003- President's Commission Report recommends comprehensive reforms to U.S. mental health system.

SAMHSA's Family Guide to Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy and Drug Free provides information to parents about how to communicate and work with children and adolescents to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug use.

SAMHSA Behavioral Health Headlines provides the latest issue of Headlines and allows users to search the entire Headlines database for information on behavioral health trends and news nationwide.

Nebraska Mental Health Substance Abuse and Gambling Services Directory- July 2003 - This directory is a service of the Nebraska Office of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Addiction Services, and lists the known providers of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Gambling services, as of July 2003.

"Crafting Logic Models for Systems of Care: Ideas Into Action" (Hernandez & Hodges, 2003) is now available in print form and as an electronic pdf file on line. The monograph is timely and will be useful to communities and organizations committed to improving mental health services for children and their families.

Real Men, Real Depression - NIMH education campaign to reach men with depression. View public service announcements, meet real men with depression, and learn more about the signs and symptoms of depression and where to go for help.

The Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives of the United States Department of Labor provides information and resources on health-related initiatives and much more.

The Charitable Choice Handbook for Ministry Leaders provides information on Charitable Choice and how faith-based organizations may benefit from it.
